Dr. Jyoti Sahi D.D. (Serampore) N.D.D. (London)

Born in 1944 in Pune, Jyoti studied art for four years in London, at the Camberwell school of Arts and Crafts.

On returning to India, he taught art at the American International School in Delhi, and the Blue Mountains School in Ooty, South India. In 1967 Jyoti joined Dom Bede Griffiths, and Laurie Baker at Kurisumala Ashram in Kerala, where there was the idea to create a community of people interested in relating Indian Christian life to the cultural traditions of India.

Jyoti met Jane Sadler in the home of Laurie Baker, and later, in 1970 Dom Bede married Jane and Jyoti in the chapel of Shantivanam Ashram, where they were now living.

In 1970 Jane and Jyoti were invited to settle near Bangalore, and Jyoti began to work with Dr. Amalorpavadas, who had established the National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (N.B.C.L.C) in 1968.

Jane and Jyoti built their home on a piece of land near the Christian village of Silvepura, about 20km from Bangalore, where Jane started a non formal school based on the ideals of Tagore and Gandhi, in 1975.

Jyoti set up the Indian School of Art for Peace (INSCAPE) in 1983, with the idea of relating art to Indian spirituality.

Jyoti and Jane have five children, who have been involved in different creative ways, in both art and education.

Jyoti has been running art workshops, and art retreats for groups who want to relate art practices and spiritual insights in the Indian context. Groups of students as well as pilgrims to Indian Ashrams have spent time at the Art Ashram exploring the creative dimensions of their life, using extended art practices as a means to self discovery.

The main purpose of INSCAPE is to find ways in which art can act as a bridge between different religious traditions, as an aid to interfaith dialogue.
