Art and Ceramic workshops
These workshops are for groups of children or students of art or who wish to use Sangams ceramic studio facilities and participate in a programme of workshops exploring the medium of clay and to learn the skills of ceramics. The workshops vary according to the age and skill of the visiting groups and can range from learning about the creative possibilities of clay, to working through the process of production of a large scale glazed ceramic mural. These workshops are arranged with the school or college who are sending the group to fit with the term dates and courses.
Possible activities involve:-Becoming used to the medium of clay, how it behaves, how it can be used and reacts to use.
-Learning techniques using clay to make hand made objects; pinching, coiling, slabbing, joining and slip cast tequniques.
-Using a potters wheels to learn how to turn a pot with either electric or hand turned equipment.
-Learning the process of firing the wood fired kiln and the complexities of how the elements of earth and fire affect each other.
-Learning the process and chemistry of creating a glaze and the procedures involved in application.
-Understanding how glazes react to the firing process, and how a wood fired kiln affects glazes.
-Experimenting with different methods of firing including raku.
